Mr. Samuel Jack Hughes, age 89, of Watauga, TN passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Washington County, TN he was the son of the late Walter E. and Florence Eva Croy Hughes. Mr. Hughes was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and East Tennessee State University. He was a masonry contractor. Mr. Hughes was a U.S. Marine Veteran of World War II and was a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post #2166, the American Legion Post #49 and the Marine Corp League. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Manning Hughes; a daughter, Beth Samples; two brothers, Ross Hughes and Howard Hughes and three sisters, Wanda Lacey, Thelma Duncan and Pansy Sichler. Survivors include three sons, Samuel Jack “Sonny” Hughes Jr. and wife Kathy, Elizabethton, John Hughes and wife Ronda, Knoxville, TN and Jeremy Samples and wife Shannon, Elizabethton; two daughters, Marisa Potter and husband Dale Potter, Elizabethton and Kelly Jo McIntyre and husband Dr. Jonah McIntyre, Alabama; four grandchildren, Christian Potter, John Hughes, Zack Hughes and Samuel McIntyre; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Samples and Anna Samples and two brothers, Walter Hughes and Bob Hughes, both of Watauga. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at a funeral service to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Samuel Jack Hughes at 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Range Community Christian Church with Mr. Randy Overdorf and Mr. Chuck Milam, ministers officiating. Music will be under the direction of Tonya Milam and Debbie Miller. The family will receive friends at the Church from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Thursday prior to the funeral service or at the residence at any time. Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Friday, December 13, 2013 in George Mottern Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be John Hughes, Zack Hughes, Dr. Jonah McIntyre, Dale Potter, Doug Smalling and Charlie Norman. Military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Marine Funeral Honors. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 9:50 A.M. on Friday for the graveside service. The family would like to express a special thank you to his caregivers, Teresa Beam, Marcia Fletcher, Edith Canter and Beverly Lethcoe for their loving care given to Mr. Hughes.
