Mr. Rudolph “Rudy” Gouge, age 86, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Friday, June 7, 2013 in Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness. Rudy was born on February 15, 1927 in Hampton, TN. He was the son of the late Sherman and Tamie Stevens Gouge. He was the owner/operator of Gouge Grocery on Stateline Road. Rudy was interested in boating and fishing at Watauga Lake and for a time was affectionately called the “Mayor of Watauga Lake”. He played basketball at Hampton High School and held the record for the “most points per game” for several years. He also loved music and dancing. Rudy was a U.S. Army veteran having served in France and Germany during World War II and he served in the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Bethana Gouge Fine and a brother, Mac Donald Gouge. Survivors include his wife of fifty-nine years, Carolyn Ornduff Gouge, of the home; a sister, Geneva Young, Johnson City, TN; a sister-in-law, Martha Gouge; nieces, Gena Fine Frye and husband J. Paul Frye, Piney Flats, TN; Marlene Young Collins and husband Andy, Colonial Heights, Kingsport, TN and nephews, Don Gouge and wife Lynne, Steve Fine, Johnson City, TN, Lester Young and wife Adele, Frechole, NJ and George Young and wife Pam, Elizabethton, TN. Several great-nieces and great-nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mr. Gouge will be conducted at 7:00 PM Tuesday, June 11, 2013, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Tuesday. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 12, 2013, in Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be rendered by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Glen Gouge, Don Gouge, Kenneth Little, Glen Little, Ron Little, and Tom Ornduff. Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Lingerfelt, Ron McCloud, Bob Lipford, Ted Tipton, Vaughan Luther, Bill Carter, Mike Lingerfelt, Chad Allara, Paul Frye, George Young, Lester Young, Steve Fine, Garth Fine, Woody Ornduff, and Stanley Green. Those wishing to attend the service on Wednesday are asked to meet at the funeral home at 9:00 AM. The family would like to extend a very special thanks to the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home for their awesome care, love, and support shown to Rudy and his family.
