Richard Stephen Lyons, age 76, of Johnson City, TN passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born to the late Henry F. “Boots” Lyons and Rhoda Frances Townsend Reeme. Richard was born in Johnson City, but spent the majority of his life in Washington, D.C. Richard was a member of the IOOF Columbia Lodge #10 and was the finder of the Clara Barton Office of Missing Soldiers, now a museum in D.C. He also was a member of Powder Branch Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Judith “Judy” Irene Lyons Dale, Sandra Kay “Sandy” Lyons Adams and Charles Robert “Bobby” Lyons and several aunts, uncles and grandparents that have gone on before him. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sarah Strappello-Lyons; brother-in-law, Rick Strappello (Connie), sister-in-law, Lois Strappello; three aunts, Carolyn Shelley, Linda Killen and Reba Townsend and many cousins and other family members also survive. A service to celebrate the life of Richard Stephen Lyons will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 5, 2023 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Mr. Gene Cornett officiating. I met Richard Lyons in 1985. He was such a sweet and kind man who was very knowledgeable about carpentry work since he worked for General Services Administration for the Federal Government in Washington. DC. Richard was kind enough to replace 3 exterior security doors at my home in Marylamd. Richard, you are in heaven now with God. Sarah, I am so sorry for your loss of your husband, Richard. Rest in Peace, Richard.

The entire staff of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum send thoughts, prayers and thanks to Richard for his dedication to history and doing the right thing. He is proof that one person can make a difference. Thank you Sarah for allowing Richard to have 'another woman' in Clara Barton. Her legacy is alive because of the Lyon's family. I posted a link to our video interview with Richard sharing his discovery story.
