Mary Gale Smalling Woods, age 99, of Elizabethton, TN passed away on July 24, 2013, at Hillview Health Center, Elizabethton. She was a native and lifelong resident of Carter County and lived most of her life in Elizabethton. Mrs. Woods was a daughter of the late David Robert and Linda Jane (Carver) Smalling. She was a graduate of Happy Valley High School and East Tennessee State University. She taught in the Carter County school system for almost thirty years and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the American Association of Retired Persons. In addition to teaching at Range, Central and Valley Forge Elementary Schools, she worked for the Office of Price Administration during World War II. Mrs. Woods was a long-time member of First Christian Church of Elizabethton. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Woods was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in 1983; two brothers, Woodrow Smalling and Lloyd Smalling and three sisters, Bertha Little, Alma Knebel and Edna Range. She is survived by a daughter, Gail Woods Aycock and husband Frank, Boone, NC; a son, Bob Woods and wife Susan, Michigantown, IN; one granddaughter, Karen Alonso and husband Perg, Flagstaff, AZ; three grandsons, Allen Aycock and wife Katie, Fayetteville, NC, Wes Aycock, Greensboro, NC and Mike Woods, Brunswick, GA and a great-grandson, Brady Alonso, Flagstaff, AZ. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The family wishes to express special appreciation to Jim and Pat Dolgner who have been loving friends and neighbors for a number of years. Funeral service for Mary Gale Smalling Woods will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, July 27, 2013, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Dr. Don Marshall, Mr. Brent Nidiffer and Mr. Bob Woods, ministers officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. on Saturday prior to the service. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Jackie Brumit Memorial Fund, c/o First Christian Church, 513 Hattie Avenue, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
