Lt. Col. George E. Linebaugh, U.S. Army Retired, 96, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at Hillview Health Care following an extended illness. A native of Baileyton, TN, he was the son of the late John M. and Clemmie Mae Newman Linebaugh.  He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School where he was named as a member of the Hall of Fame and attended Milligan College. He retired as a Lt. Col. from the U.S. Army after twenty-seven years. His tours of duty in addition to the United States, included Germany, the Alutian Islands and Taiwan where he served as commander. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Elizabethton.  In addition to his parents, Lt. Col. Linebaugh was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Pearman Linebaugh, two brothers, Newman Linebaugh and Jay Linebaugh and one sister, Irene Linebaugh Parsons. Survivors include three sisters, Bertie Ann Long, Mary Jessie Jenkins, and Reba Markland, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.  Funeral service for Lt. Col. George E. Linebaugh, U.S. Army Retired will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, February 28, 2010 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Rev. Lauri Jo Cranford officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00-2:00 P.M. on Sunday prior to the funeral service. Graveside service and interment will follow the funeral service in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be George Gwinn Jr., Jonathan Gwinn, Randall Bennett, Josh Mosley, Wayne Kelley, John Kelley, Jacob Tipton, and David Linebaugh. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Linebaugh and Bill Linebaugh. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post #49.  Memorials in lieu of flowers to those who desire may be made to First United Methodist Church, 325 East E Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643 or to the American Cancer Society, c/o Lou Cooter, 415 Washington Avenue, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
