Herman R. Potter

Mr. Herman R. Potter, 84, 453 Cedar Grove Road, Johnson City died Thursday, April 16, 2009 in the Christian Care Center of Johnson City following a brief illness resulting from an accident. A native of Carter County, TN he was the son of the late James T. and Alice Chesser Potter. He retired from North American Rayon Corporation after thirty-eight years of service. Mr. Potter was known as “Sleepy” and “The Candy Man” by those that knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. Survivors include a sister, Georgie Morley and her husband Wayne, Johnson City; several nephews and one niece. Graveside service for Mr. Herman R. Potter will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 18, 2009 in Lyons Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be nephews; Mike Potter, Gary Potter, Dale Williams, Jake Williams, Robert Miller and Mike Collins. Honorary pallbearer will be Larry Morley. Family and friends will meet at Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home at 1:15 PM on Saturday to go in procession to the cemetery.Read Obituary

I am very saddened by Mr. Potter's passing. Years ago, my husband started picking him up when he would see him out walking. After I had been with him several times, I too started giving him a ride. I always enjoyed taking him to the bus stop or back home. He always offered me candy or gum. As a nurse, I always warned him about walking in the heat or cold and he would say, "the doctor told me to walk every day and I do." I had not seen him out since winter and that is why I checked the obituaries. My heart goes out to you and your family. I just wanted you to know that he touched my life, he taught me never to just stay in and let life pass you by but to get out and keep going as long as you can.I will always think of him when I pass the bus stop.##imported-begin##Ivy Tester##imported-end##

I have known THE CANDY MAN about 8yrs. He has been bringing me candy for that long. He would save my favorites in his pocket instead of the bag (cause he wanted to make sure I got the ones I liked )I was further down on his list of shops he stopped my almost everyday rain or shine snow or no. He was a sweet man and I really enjoyed our many talks about his life and family. He talked alot about his sister and niece that took care of him.Brought him candy to give and always made sure he had a hot meal. He talked of the years he worked and the love he lost,so he never married.He was a special man and will always hold a place in my heart.GOD BLESS you and your family an accept my deepest condolences.##imported-begin##sharon branch##imported-end##
