Geraldine Smith Peters, age 90, of Elizabethton went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at her residence following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late William Jennings Bryant “Bill” and Opal Vestal Oliver Smith. Geraldine was a former employee of Reed’s Style Shop and Tate’s Store. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband and father of her children, William Howard Peters; a son-in-law, Francis “Chip” Purdy; a nephew, David Barton Smith and a brother-in-law, Hayes Eller. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Suzette Peters Purdy, Arlington, TX and Teresa Anne Peters Broome and husband Rick, Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Christopher Sean Purdy and wife Jill, Cumming, GA and Michael Sterling Purdy and wife Donna, Baton Rouge, LA; eight great-grandchildren, Christopher, Lauren, Will, Caleb, Kole, Isabella, Hayes and Quinley Purdy; a sister, Christine Smith Eller, Elizabethton; a brother, Robert Harvey Smith and wife Joan, Greenwood, MS; a niece, Stacie Smith Crim and husband Bill, Jackson MS and a nephew, Brent Smith and wife Laura, Oxford, MS. Several great-nieces and great-nephews and a special friend, Anna Banner, Elizabethton also survive. Funeral service for Geraldine Smith Peters will be conducted at 8:00 P.M. Thursday, November 1, 2012 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. prior to the funeral service or at the residences of her daughter, Teresa Broome or her sister, Christine Eller at other times. Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 2, 2012 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fidelis Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 10:15 A.M. on Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
