Frances I. Hopson Stout

Frances I. Hopson Stout, age 85, formerly of Jonesborough, TN passed away Thursday, April 4, 2019 in the Durham Hensley Nursing Home in Chuckey, TN. She was the daughter of the late Bill and Ailene Nave Hopson and was a native of Carter County. Frances was a charter member of Community Baptist Church, Jonesborough.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Stout on November 4, 1995; a brother Arlin E. Hopson and a sister, Geraldine Hodge. Those left to cherish her memory include three sons, Glenn Stout and wife Ethelene, Ronnie Stout and wife Darlene and Gary Stout and wife Betty, all of Limestone, TN; three granddaughters, Beth Pugh and husband Todd, Limestone, TN; Dionne Ganger and husband Ted, Johnson City, TN and Kelli Goetzke and husband Drew, Telford, TN; three great-granddaughters, Makenzie Williams, Chloe Ganger and Macy Ganger and a sister, Ruby Vandergriff and husband Clyde, Elizabethton, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service to honor the life of Frances I. Hopson Stout will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, April 7, 2019 in Caldwell Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Lynn Neas officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Jerry Barnett. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Everyone attending will meet at the cemetery at 2:50 P.M. on Sunday for the graveside service. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Durham Hensley Nursing Home for their loving care of Mrs. Stout. Frances was a good woman. I never knew anything bad about her at all. She was gentle, kind, helpful. We met when she was the new bride of my cousin Paul and I was in junior high. She and Paul lived in a house that had been moved onto my uncle’s farm and placed near the house my aunt and uncle lived in with their other children. Frances seemed very young.

Paul’s father, Wiley, was my mother’s oldest brother. He had inherited the family farm in Doeville. TVA took that land for Watauga Lake (not that they ever flooded more than the few lowest fields but they took the entire farm anyway) and Aunt Hazel and Uncle Wiley moved to a farm on Stoney Creek. My mother, Cleo Bowman, was very attached to her family and we visited my aunt and uncle every week when I was growing up (after we got a car, and especially after mother learned to drive). We would go there sometime during the week after mother got off work. I must have seen Frances many times during the first few years of her marriage but there were girls in my uncle’s family closer to me in age and I usually spent most of my time with them.

Uncle Wiley and Aunt Hazel left Stoney Creek and moved to a farm near Jonesboro (as it was then spelled), much closer to our home in Johnson City. At some time Paul and Frances lived in an apartment in that large stone house on the corner of East Highland Road and Maple Street, even closer to our home.

When I returned to Johnson City, Frances was again living on the farm near Aunt Hazel’s house. Paul had died just a few years before in a terrible tractor accident. I visited with Frances several times during those years. I think my mother (who died in 1987) always stayed in close touch with her. She was a very kind person. I am so grateful that she has been part of my life.

There is something about family connections that gives deep meaning to life.
