Billy “Joe” Bowman, Sr., age 49, of 326 Weaver Hill Road, Johnson City, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013 at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Johnson City, he was a son of the late Herbert Hoover and Margaret Sue Wishon Bowman. Billy Joe was a former employee of Newman Heat and Air. He loved horses and enjoyed working on cars and motorcycles. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowman was preceded in death by three sisters, Patsy Gortney, Charlotte “Sue” Davis, and Kathy Bowman; a brother, Jackie Bowman; and a brother-in-law, Leon “Cotton” Davis. He is survived by his wife, Toshie Bowman, of the home; a son, Billy Joe Bowman, Jr., of the home; a daughter, Sierra Ferguson, Johnson City; three sisters, Linda Bowman and Larry Estep, of Elizabethton, who were like grandparents to Billy, Jr., Judy Bowman, Lebanon, VA, and Debra Bowman, Johnson City; three brothers, Jerry “Speedy” Bowman and wife, Joy, Jonesborough, Hoover “Chubby” Bowman and wife, Ginger, Johnson City, and Larry “Baldy” Bowman, and wife, Lisa, Johnson City; a brother-in-law, Raymond Gortney, Johnson City; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Bowman, Johnson City; a special aunt, Elmar Self; and special friends, Scott Currington, of Erwin, who was like a brother to Billy Joe, Glen Stamper of Cumberland, VA, and Maria Skipper. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Billy Joe Bowman, Sr. will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 16, 2013 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Chaplain Karen Morris officiating. The family will receive friends from Noon to 2:00 P.M. Thursday in the funeral home chapel prior to the service or at the residence at other times. The graveside service will be held in the Scalf Cemetery immediately following the funeral on Thursday. Active pallbearers will be Scott Currington, Paul Bowman, Jeff Bowman, Joe Barnett, Charlie Gilbert, and Bobby Self. Honorary pallbearers will be Landon White, Kennith Harless, Robert “Brother” Ellis, Steve Graham, Jeff Britt, and Stevie Self. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Caris Hospice, social worker J.J. Schlemner, nurses Amanda Howlett and Nonie Weir, and caregiver Lynda Byrd for the excellent care given to Billy Joe during his illness.
