Pauline Benfield Greer, age 97, passed away in the early morning hours on Friday, July 3, 2015 at her home in Elizabethton, TN. She was born on April 4, 1918 in Ingalls, NC. Her parents were Elda Ollis Benfield and Floyd Preston Benfield. She was one of ten children and is survived by one brother, Berlin Benfield. Mrs. Greer completed the 8th grade and went on to take some Business College courses at the school in Elizabethton. She worked at several jobs in her lifetime, but worked for forty-two years at the North American Rayon plant holding various jobs in multiple departments. She retired in 1984 and concentrated on her grandchildren, gardens and quilting. She loved flowers and quilting; in her lifetime, she completed over 500 quilts. Survivors include four children: Ashley, Sharon, Laura and Scott Jr. Eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren also survive. A Celebration of Life Service for Pauline Benfield Greer will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Sunday, July 5, 2015 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Sunday prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, July 6, 2015 in Green Valley Baptist Church Cemetery, Spruce Pine, NC. Active pallbearers will be Jonathan, Scotty, Jeremy, Buzz, Robert and Colin. Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:50 P.M. on Monday. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff at Amedisys Hospice for the excellent care and assistance given to Mrs. Greer in these last few years. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the American Cancer Society, c/o Lou Cooter, 415 Washington Avenue, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
