Martha Belle Bunton Query

Martha Bunton Query, 88, of Unicoi, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 9, 2015 at the Unicoi County Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Buntontown in 1927 to Frank and Pearl Burton Bunton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Query of Maroa, IL and by her siblings, Scott Bunton, Asa Bunton, Lois Phyllis Bunton and Dwight Bunton.Mrs. Query taught school beginning in Puerto Rico in 1949 and continued to teach until 2007, substituting after retiring as a full-time teacher in 1984. She was active in church work, Daughters of the American Revolution and the National League of American Penwomen, as long as she was able. She a world traveler who enjoyed square dancing at the Johnson City Square Dancer’s. She was of the Baptist Faith.She is survived by her sister, Elma Ruth Stanton, Butler; a brother, Raymond Bunton, Tallahassee, FL; two step-sons; several step-grandchildren; three nieces, Lois B. Shults-Davis, Unicoi; Cathy Alesa Bunton, Elizabethton; Debbie Bunton Mims, Woodbine, GA; three nephews, Scotty Jack Bunton, Elizabethton; Dean Bunton, Tallahassee, FL and Greg Bunton, Tallahassee, FL as well as several cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Query will be conducted on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with her family officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:30 – 7:00 PM on Tuesday prior to the service. A graveside service and interment service will be conducted on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at 3:30 PM in Sugar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Johnson County. Active pallbearers will be Kenneth Grant Shults, Joe Shults, Scott Shults, Mike Davis, Larry Nave and Scott Bunton. Honorary pallbearers will be her students and classmates. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet the family at the funeral home at 2:30 PM on Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to Milligan College, P. Martha was my English teacher at Hampton high school in the early '50's. Hampton Tennessee . She was a "shirttail" cousin of ours. Her home in Unicoi was a real museum.

I "met" Ms. Martha through my Mama, Betty Dugger, via the DAR. What an exciting and interesting woman she surely was as she told of me of her life journeys mostly while we were speaking on the telephone. She wrote such kind things about my Mama in her letters to me, speaking so highly of her. My Mama felt the same about Ms. Martha. They shared a kinship that many probably didn't realize. It appears Ms. Martha lived a life "full" here on earth, much of which will be rewarded in Heaven. I know Mama will be glad to see her friend again. The Julius Dugger Chapter of the DAR will greatly miss such a strong member and true historian. My prayers are lifted for comfort to the family during this time of sorrow.

Martha was a dear friend that was instrumental of getting the family that I married into from Puerto Rico to Tennessee. Iris Santiago Acosta was the first to come over with Martha to get a better education. Then came Blanca Santiago Miller and then my father-in-law, Alberto Santiago. I met my wife at East Tenn State University. As I got to know the family more, Martha was always good to me encouraging me in my career of education. After I retired, I began helping Martha around the house to do things that she could not accomplish herself. I told Rebecca Plummer tonight at the service, that the more you were around Martha, the bigger you saw her heart. She had a heart of gold for everyone she touched. I will miss her stories told personally by her, even though she wrote down many of them to where we can read them. She was so educated and so full of information. She will be missed by many. We loved Martha and she called me her "Angle of Mercy" , but actually she was the Angle of Mercy!

Wasn't she a beauty! Martha was our neighbor since we moved to Unicoi four years ago, and we came to know what an intelligent, unique person she was. I can't imagine how many lives she touched in her long, eventful life, but I know we will miss her.

Mrs. Query was that special teacher that students long remember. She understood us at a time when we didn't quite understand ourselves. With a genuine smile and twinkle in her eyes, she planted her seed of faith in us. Martha was a close personal friend and confidant over these many years since our days at MFHS. I treasure her letters filled with words of comfort, compassion, hope, humor, insight, history, and so much more. How I shall miss that trip back from the mailbox, letter in hand from my friend, eager to see what she has to share, knowing the pages would be rich. Martha filled every space in her life and in doing so, enriched the lives of those who knew her. There won't soon be another like her.
